Isopropyl Alcohol 70% is a common antiseptic and cleaning solution made from 70% isopropyl alcohol (also called IPA or rubbing alcohol) and 30% purified water. It is a multi-purpose product and used for disinfecting skin, dehydrating the nail bed, sanitising surfaces, and cleaning tools.

70% is the best level of IPA for nail treatments, as anything with a higher level of alcohol evaporates too fast to be able to kill bacteria. The 70% mix has enough water (30%) to penetrate cell walls and destroy germs completely.

It is a quick and easy way to remove natural oils from the nail plate, allowing the product to get a good grip. It can also be used for removing the inhibition layer (sticky layer) after curing gel polish.

Nail prep use:

  • Removes oils: IPA removes natural oils that sit on the nail plate.
  • Dehydrates nail: It temporarily dehydrates the nail surface.
  • Better grip: Base coats and acrylic products will grip the nail must better once moisture is removed. This helps for better retention and reduces the product lifting or peeling away prematurely.

Removing the inhibition layer

  • Most gel polish top coats (unless a non-wipe top coat) will leave a sticky layer behind. IPA easily removes this without affecting the overall results. Leaving a hard, shiny finish.

Cleaning and Disinfecting

  • Removes dust: IPA is ideal for wiping away and removing left over dust from filing and buffing the nails.
  • Disinfects tools: IPA can be used to clean metal tools, glass files, and work stations between clients, although we always recommend thorough cleaning and sanitising to ensure client safety.

The Difference Between IPA and Acetone

Many people confuse IPA with Acetone, but they do different jobs:

  • IPA is a mild solvent. It gently cleans the nail and dehydrates it without breaking down cured nail products.
  • Acetone is a very strong solvent. It is used to soak off existing gel polish, can break down acrylic products or gel nails completely.
  • Both products are extremely flammable and should be stored safely and handled with care.
  • Neither product should be discarded down the sink. It should be absorbed into a soft cloth (such as kitchen towel) and placed in a bin bag.

STORAGE & USEAGE

  • Store IPA in a cool dark place, away from heat, sparks, naked flames and direct sunlight
  • Always use in a well ventilated area
  • Keep containers tightly sealed when not in use
  • Store away from oxidising agents.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

  • Highly flammable
  • For external use only
  • Avoid contact with eyes
  • Do not ingest
  • Keep away from heat and open flames
  • Store in a tightly closed container out of reach of children
